A half note (minim) lasts for 2 beats. They are notated as a hollow note with a straight stem.

A half note rest is a solid rectangle on top of the middle line of the stave.

A whole note (semibreve) lasts for 4 beats. They are notated as a hollow note with no stem.

A whole note rest is a solid rectangle hanging from the second top line.

Start by clicking on any of the first examples and listening to them. Then play the parts on your drums starting at 80 BPM. Once comfortable, start increasing the tempo up to 180 BPM or more. These examples are at 100 BPM.
